A startup called Lunaz is looking to make a bold entry into the high-end electric car market by announcing its plans to give a new life to the iconic cars from the past, by fitting the all-electric powertrains to give them relevance for the 21st century. Eventhough Lunaz might be a new name in this sector, but its team is full of automotive expertise.
The electric powertrains are being designed and manufactured completely in-house in Silverstone, UK and are being tailor made to the minute dimensions for each vehicle. The vehicles are being scanned with 3D scanners in order to design the bespoke powertrain on the computer.
Lunaz electric car credentials get extra bonus points because of the quick charging and regenerative braking, and also thanks to driving aids like traction and cruise control. Throttle-by-wire replaces the old school accelerator technology. And the old fuel caps are repurposed as electric charging point, which gives it a good touch.
According to Lunaz it will redesign the interiors with tailor made designs with the help of automotive and fashion designers. Modern gadgets like Sat Nav, Wi-Fi, entertainment and communications systems will also be fitted. New climate control systems will also be installed. New electric systems will be operational through the original dashboard dials and buttons. Even the minor defects due to age in the body of the cars will also be rectified.
The three classic vehicles being currently retrofitted by Lunaz include, an eight seater 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom V which will have a 120-kWh battery pack, a Jaguar XK120 from 1953 with an 80-kWh battery and a 1956 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud the electric power of which is yet to be disclosed. The Jaguar is in the advanced stage of the retrofit and is being tested. As per Lunaz its twin motors are good enough for 700 Nm (516 ft-lb) of torque from standstill and 375 bhp.
Lunaz was able to transform its work from just the drawing board to road under the able and technical ledership of Jon Hilton, the former techical director of the engine divisions of many of the Formula 1 teams, including Renault. The Lunaz team has gained a lot of their experience from Volkswagen, Ford, McLaren, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce and the Formula 1 teams.
Orders can directly be placed with Lunaz starting November 2019, with prices starting from US$430,000 (£350,000) excluding tax.
